I first got interested in Atlantis when a book about it literally fell at my feet in a bookstore. Three times. I’d put it back on the shelf and it’d fall right back down. Now, I can believe I didn’t push it far enough back on the shelf once, but three times? So, I figured I was supposed to learn about it.

This book is not the one that fell at my feet. That one got lost during my many moves. This one takes a more scientific approach. This isn’t about the culture of Atlantis or anything like that. It talks about the surprisingly large supply of evidence that the island did actually exist at some point in time.

The flood story is common to almost all cultures and religions. It is sometimes accompanied by stories of fire from the heavens and subterranean fires bursting forth and other climactic cataclysms. And we have plenty of archaeological evidence of large populations of animals quite suddenly being killed. There are large finds of animals flash-frozen so quickly that when they thaw, animals sometimes eat them. Remember the woolly mammoth with buttercups still in her mouth?

There are places on the sea floor of the Arctic Ocean that are covered with the bones of large mammals. And there are mountains that show evidence of having been sea ports, so they were sea level at some point. There are cave drawings that show many of our giant deserts having once been lush with vegetation. Photographs taken from the space shuttle show significant evidence of this, too.

I mean, something big time happened here and it wasn’t just a flood. There are animals that seem to have a genetic memory of a land that is no longer there. Flocks of birds that migrate between Europe and South America start circling the ocean, like they’re looking for a place to land before they seem to give up on it and continue their migration. And where do they do that? Right where Atlantis would have been. There’s a butterfly does that, too. Unfortunately, they are no nearly so hardy as birds and they fall into the sea and die. Kind of like lemmings. Is that what they’re doing, too? Running off to a land that is no longer there?

A lot of the book sounds like Ancient Aliens, which is hardly surprising, since Atlantis has often been tied to those stories. The book has pictures of cave drawings that show what appear to be flying machines and advanced technology. It talks about all those giant land drawings that form images that could not possibly have been seen from the prospective of where they were made.

The point is, it’s starting to look like Atlantis did actually exist. And even if you don’t believe anything this book says, any of the conclusions it draws, it’s still filled with fascinating natural history accounts. So, whether you believe in the legend or not, it a great book.
