The first edition of the Guinness Book of Records in 1955 contained a small number of music records, including a section on composers and one on "Musical Best Sellers". As with many other records, the music section later expanded and more in-depth music records were to be found in publications such as "The Guinness Book of Music Facts & Feats", published in 1976. The following year, the best-sellers theme became a book series of its own with the publication of "The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles".

The first edition of what was to become a long running series of books was published in both paperback and hardback form and ran to 275 pages; later editions were only published in paperback, with the 19th and final edition running to an impressive 717 pages. The first three editions were subtitled, "The Guinness Book of Records Records", showing that they were considered to be sister publications to the main books.

A companion series of books, "The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums" was launched in 1983 and ran for seven editions before merging with the Hit Singles series in 2004. As usual with Guinness publications, a large number of other music books were published, many of which directly complemented the books in this series. We will add details of such books to this page as and when we come across them.
