The began with a petit dèeuner, or breakfast, in what the English call a "greasy spoon" café. For very good reason. As I stared down at my plate of Fried eggs, fried bacon, fried bread, fried sausage and, as far as I could tell, fried baked beans, all sitting glumly in a pool of rapidly congealing, supposedly virgin olive oil - (but which, by its colour, would appear to have lost its virginity many fry-ups ago) - I could not help but reflect upon the train of events that had briught me from my home in the little village of Menerbés in the South of France, to Sid's Diner in North London's Muswell Hill Broadway,at 10 o'clock in the morning on a cold and overcast New Year's Day
