First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to the then British foreign secretary and future prime minister: "H.E. Mr. Anthony Eden. Dear Mr. Eden, I hope you or your charming wife will get a chance to read this book. My desire is that it will serve our common ideas and cause. Yours, Trygve Lie. Rugldalen, Norway, August 9th 1954".

Lie (1896-1968) was the Norwegian foreign minister during the Norwegian government's exile in London from 1940 to 1945, where he worked closely with Eden as foreign secretary. From 1946 to 1952, Lie served as the first secretary general of the United Nations. In the Cause of Peace is his memoir of his time at the UN, covering the early years of the institution, the beginning of the Cold War, the founding of Israel, and the Korean War.

Lie notes, "During the war I had formed a warm friendship for Anthony Eden. I had known and admired his courageous stand against the prevailing mood of his own Conservative party in the later 1930's, his opposition to appeasement and effort to revitalize the League of Nations and make it a real force for collective security against aggression before it was too late" (p. 11). Lie writes that he pushed for Eden to become Secretary General of the UN rather than himself, but was opposed by the Labour government in Britain. The appointment of Lie reflected a preference for a candidate who was not one of the leading figures of the great powers.
