Although O. N. Nelson originally intended to compile a biographical dictionary of Scandinavians in America who had succeeded in becoming influential in religious, political, professional, social or financial circles, he felt that the work would be of far greater value if it was extended to include all the greater events of Scandinavian-American history. As a result Part One includes seventeen articles written by different authorities on Scandinavian history such as "History of the Scandinavian Immigration," "The Icelandic Discoveries of America," "The First Swedish Settlement in America," "The First Norwegian Immigration to America," and "The Swedish Colony at Bishopshill, Illinois" to name a few. Part Two concentrates on the biographical dictionary of successful Scandinavians in America. Illustrations include places of interests and portraits of many prominent men.
