The three films. A Woman is a Woman (1961), A Married Woman (1964), and Two or Three Things That I Know About Her (1966), form a trilogy in which the director, at different stages of his career, deals with twenty-four hours in the life of a woman living in Paris. The book illustrates Godard's ability to break away from cinematic conventions. As a director of the new wave, he is continually experimenting with language and technique; and throughout these controversial features his social awareness and political commitment are brilliantly illustrated.

A Woman is a Woman examines the eternal triangle in a film which is really a nostalgic parody of the Hollywood musical. As in his other works, Godard is constantly reminding the audience that it is not life they are watching but a spectacle. He takes on a totally unemotional approach in A Married Woman in order to make the spectator reflect in the abstract on certain problems. In this we again see the human triangle, as he shows that there is virtually no difference between the girl's marriage to Robert and her affair with Pierre. Two or Three Things That I Know About Her defies conventional classification. Here Godard casts a critical look upon modern society. Punctuated with shots of signs and advertisements, it a film about a film. The director's whispered commentary throughout reflects on his art, discusses his choices, questions his means of expression and explains his aims.
