It is 1950 and Harry Block, a fighter pilot who distinguished himself in the skies over Europe during World War II, is recalled to active duty for the Korean War. Instead of returning to service, Harry decides to abandon his career and his suburban life, hijacking a plane and reinventing himself as Harry Kraft. He sets out to live an extraordinary life of action and adventure against the backdrop of the mid-twentieth century. Harry eventually ends up in the tropical heat of Guatemala, a country controlled by the American U.S. Fruit Corporation and led by a shaky president facing threats of military coups and popular uprisings. While Harry is content flying cargo planes for small-time smugglers, he finds he cannot escape his past as the C.I.A., the army, communist agitators, and corporate interests all seem to be conspiring against him.
