The ancient world frequently operated on the principles of physiognomics—the belief that an individual's character could be deciphered through their external, physical attributes. Modern biblical scholarship has largely overlooked how physical descriptions convey moral significance in characterization, a gap this study directly addresses. Specifically, this research focuses on a single physical marker: blindness. An examination of Greco-Roman literature reveals a distinct literary topos—a shared set of assumptions ancient audiences routinely applied to blind characters. This study argues that Luke-Acts utilizes this topos programmatically, offering an overlooked interpretive key to the narrative.
